Story

The story takes place in the province of Nuevo Mexico from the period of 1800-1852. Dona Tules lived under the flags of there different nations, Spain, Mexico and United States, a very turbulent era in Nuevo Mexico's history. She is accompanied by her childhood friend, Pastales, working friend, Rose, and the protective spirit of a Native American Shaman. An American trader and a trio of nuns provide musings about life and times of the village.

Through her own ambition and intellect Dona Tules eventually rose from being a poor Mexican peon to becoming the wealthiest woman in Santa Fe. Owner of the largest gambling sala, the Gambling Queen of the West, Dona Tules, entertained adventurers traveling on the Santa Fe Trail and El Camino Real.

In Santa Fe, Dona Tules had an affair with the married Mexican Governor, Manual Armijo. After accepting a bribe to concede to the American occupation, without a single shot being fired, Armijo fled to Old Mexico.

During the American occupation of Santa Fe in 1846, the U.S. Army had run out of money to continue the march to Old Mexico. Dona Tules was asked for a loan. In exchange, Dona Tules was invited to be Guest of Honor and escorted by the U.S. Army's Commanding Officer to the American Officer's Ball.

As lonesome and lovelorn years passed, the newly arrived Bishop Lamy helped prepare Dona Tules for her funeral, the largest and grandest Nuevo Mexico had ever seen.
